Serenoa is a dwarf palm that grows volunteer in the coast areas with the subtropical climate of nord America and Mediterranena basin, particularly in Nord Africa. It has leaves in the shape of a fan and fruits similar to berries as big as olives, dark red coloured.
The effectiveness of Serenoa repens is due to the synergy of several mechanism of action:
1) inhibition of 5-alpha-reduttasi, enzime involved in the trasformation of testosterone into diidrotestosterone, metabolite biologically active capable of stimulating the celllar proliferation, favourishing then the hypertrophy of prostatic tissue, and stimulating also the formation of exceeding dandruff and sebum on scalp choking the hair bulb that becomes more and more atrophic ( miniaturization of the hair) till it falls prematurely;
2) selective local antagonism of the bond between diidrotestosterone and the receptor for the androgens;
3) antiestrogenic effect, due to a strong diminishing in androgenic receptors, who seem to strenghten the hormonal action in the growth of prostatic hypertrophy;
4) antiinflammatory and antiaedemigen effect, showed by the reduced capillary permeability due to histamine. Moreover it is really reduced the cervicalprostatic obstruction.
