Description
Botanic name: Centella (L.) Urban, Hydrocotyle asiatica L. -
Family: Apiacee F.U.I. IX
Used parts: whole plant without roots
Synonymous: Indian or Asiatic Pennyworth, Waternavelwort; Marsh Pennywort
Stranger name:: it. Erba delle tigri, centella, Idrocotile, Scodella d'acqua; fr. - Centelle asiatique, Ecuelle d'eau, Bevilacque; germ. - Asiatischer Wassernabel; sanskrit - Brahamamanduki; hindu - Dakhania; malgascio - Talapetraka
Erbaceous perennial plant, volunteer in humid regions of tropical and subtropical countries (India, Pakistan, Madagascar, Brasil and Venezuela), today is intensively grown in India ( around Calcutta and Bombay) and in Madagascar. Its leaves, orbicular and reniform, are grey-green and petiolate. The name Centella seems to come from centellinare (= to sip) reffering to the fact that the plant sips continously the water of the marsh regions in which it lives. In ayurvedic medicine it has always had good name for its cicatrizant properties, particularly evident at the presence of torpid sores and varicose ulcers. Those effects, proved by modern researchers, are due to Total triterpenic fraction (FTTCA) that shows a particular trophism for connective tissue, potentiated by aminoacidic fraction.
Pennyworth shows a paricular trophism for connective tissue stimulating mainly glycosamminoglicani synthesys, basical component of amorphous matrix of connective tissue and lower degree the synthesis of fibrillar components ( collagene and elastine).
Its effect is shown by two main therapeutic actions: vasselprotective and trophic-cicatrizant.
1) VASSELPROTECTIVE EFFECT - it improves venous function, strenghtening vasal walls, decreasing venous stagnation and favourishing venous return from periphery to the heart.
2) TROPHIC-CICATRIZANT EFFECT - it produces a better vascularization, electively stimulating reticuloendothelial system, in the same way of Filatov biostimoline, favourishing tissues repairing both inside and outside . That action is due partly to an effect similar to anabolic steroid, capable of stimulating the synthesis of connective structural proteins. Indeed,
Pennyworth acts only on aminoacids like proline, hydroxiproline and alanine that represent 40% of total aminoacids of the connective.
