In countries overlooking the Atlantic, Fucus was often used in case of hypothyroidism with goitre, obesity, skin "scrofula" and
adenopathy, it was considered the main remedy for "plethorice"constitutions.
Iodine, conteined in Fucus both in inorganic form and linked to proteins, is easely absorbed by organism and is concentrated in the thyroid, where it is incorporated in thyroid hormons thyroxin and Triiodothyronine Those stimulate also basal metabolism, quicken the change and then have a slimming effect. Even arsenic, conteined in traces, can cause a slowdown of the normal energetic flow mobilizing alternatives ways for the liberation of energy. Mucilages (mucopolysaccharide) have a immunomodulator effect inducing the trasformation of lymphocytes. Metabolites of sulphurated compounds act mainly as mucolytics. Moreover they carry on a diuretic action in synergy with polifenolic compounds that together with thyroid stimulation, due to iodine, show themselves with an anticellulite effect.
